KDR Sports and Adventure Travel Pty Ltd was originally started by Ken Creighton and Richard Mullin with Denis Creighton an orginal investor in 2001
About
KDR
KDR Sports and Adventure Travel Pty Ltd was established in
Aug 2001 with a view to specialising in Inbound and Outbound
sports supporter and team tours using the website www.sportstravel.co.za
Having to add packages on to the tours both locally and overseas
led to us offering a traditional travel service for the outbound
market and a tour operator section for clients coming to
South Africa.
The office grew from small beginnings
starting originally from a spare room in Fourways, which then moved to a small office in Randburg,
Johannesburg then to a bigger office next door then to using both.
In 2004 an office in KwaZulu Natal
was also opened when Richard decided to move back to Sharks territory.
KDR are members of SATSA (South
African Tourism Services Association - member number 1182)
and Sotoda (Soweto Tourism Association)
Inbound Travel:
Coming to Southern Africa and need an itinerary put together
to suit you, then contact us with your details, needs, preferences
and budget and we will put a tour togther that will knock your
socks off.
Outbound travel:
Ask one of our consultants for details on our package holidays
around the world. From "sailing" around England in a barge
to spending a week in Greece we will have a holiday that will
suit you and your budget.
Tour
Operator - Soweto
With the aquisition of www.soweto.co.za we
tried to act as travel agents for existing tour companies.
Unfortunately we found that there were too many companies
offering you a drive through tour with a view of Soweto
through a bus window and a quick lunch at one of the restaurants
before you were rushed back to your hotel room
No tour companies offered a "complete" tour of
Soweto.
There was also a lack of information
on Soweto. There was no tourism authority (One has now
been formed - (2004 - Sotoda)) and people didn't know
how to get into contact with the right people in Soweto
except through a string of tour companies and intermediaries
- some less than reputable.
Denis (one of the
partners in KDR), who had been involved with housing
and "upliftment" projects
in Soweto for many years, gathered together a few role
players and we started gathering information. Then we put
our own tours together with Denis as the tour guide.
The tours focused on getting people out of the vehicles
and into the markets, the hostels, the squatter camps and
into some real shebeen's (local bars)
We met Thamsanqa Ndimande (Thami) who also shared the view
that a lot of tours were not experiential enough and started
using him on some of our tours. He was soon permanently
employed by us and headed up all our leisure tours.
When we took people to a squatter camp we used Mshengeuville
in the Mofolo area. We soon realised that apart from just
paying them to let us take clients around their homes,
there was far more we could do and a lot more that our
clients wanted to do.
We have since sponsored a soccer team, bought a Zozo hut
for the kids to play in, Sponsor a creche in Mshenguville and another one at one of the hostels. With the help of Bright Kids Foundation and various others we have helped
organise "Edutainers" for the creches to have
classes in, put together lots of clothes and food drives
and taken the kids on outings to places they have never
been before like nature reserves.
Tour Operator - Inbound
With having to "add on" tours for sports goups
and supporters coming in from overseas, we were getting
more and more referrals from the individuals. The logical
next step was to start advertising itineraries to clients
overseas using our network of websites.
KDR now has consultants in Joburg and Durban
who can quote on anything from Battlefields tours in the
Natal midlands to Golf tours along the Garden route and
2 week countrywide tours staying at everything from 5* luxury hotels and game lodges to mid range guesthouses.
KDR October 2011 to present
The three directors of KDR Sports and Adventure Travel Pty Ltd took a decision to split the company into 2 distinct business'. The office in Durban would retain the current business structure but the Joburg office would now concentrate on it's Sports tour, Soweto tour and Guesthouse business.
While the offices both retain the KDR Travel and Tours branding, management and ownership are kept completely seperate.
